Researchers say our eating and environmental goals don't align. If Americans change their diets to meet the current federal dietary guidelines, greenhouse gas emissions could increase, a new study reports.University of Michigan researchers looked at the current USDA’s dietary guidelines and the emissions associated with the production of 100 different foods. They then looked at how these emissions would increase or decrease if Americans adopted the dietary guidelines.

Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis. In his lengthy career, Sir David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment. While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth.

Redefining Agricultural Yields - how to feed an additional 4 billion people by 2050

10/31/2013

Global demand for crops is expected to double by 2050 as population grows and increasing affluence boosts demand for meat. Does that mean we'll need to cultivate twice as much land? Not if we're willing to shift from producing crops for animal feed and fuel to producing crops for human consumption. In this video, researcher Emily Cassidy of the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment shows that shifting crops from their current mix of uses to all food for direct human consumption could increase calorie availability from current cropland by 70 percent — enough to feed an additional 4 billion people.
The more animal products people consume, the less likely we are to feed future generations, according to a new study from the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment. Globally, meat and dairy consumption is expected to increase by 68 and 57 percent, respectively, by 2030. Increased demand for animal products stems not only from population growth, but from increasing affluence among the world’s population, which has shifted from grain-based diets to animal-based diets (meat, dairy products, and eggs).

Production of animal products requires more land and resources than plant-based foods, and now 75 percent of all agricultural land is used for animal production. The negative consequences of consuming more animal products affect the environment and future food availability, as well as world health. Greater animal product consumption is associated with increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Sharkwater - HIGHLY recommended

10/12/2013

Sharks are probably my favorite animal. They are strong, quick, smart and beautiful. There's a serious lack of understanding on mankind's part, about sharks. Most people have no idea just how integral they are to the health of the oceans and in fact, our own survival.

Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Rob Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.

Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Their unbelievable adventure together starts with a battle between the Sea Shepherd and shark poachers in Guatemala, resulting in pirate boat rammings, gunboat chases, mafia espionage, corrupt court systems and attempted murder charges, forcing them to flee for their lives.

Through it all, Stewart discovers these magnificent creatures have gone from predator to prey, and how despite surviving the earth's history of mass extinctions, they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.

Stewart's remarkable journey of courage and determination changes from a mission to save the world's sharks, into a fight for his life, and that of humankind.

Food Inc - the movie

10/12/2013

Food, Inc. has become more than a film—it's fostered a loyal community committed to living healthier lives and taking action to change the food industry.

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Featuring interviews with such experts as Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation), Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto) along with forward thinking social entrepreneurs like Stonyfield's Gary Hirshberg and Polyface Farms' Joel Salatin, Food, Inc. reveals surprising—and often shocking truths—about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans. Filmed over two years, we see firsthand the effects of our global love affair with fish as food. The film examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation. http://endoftheline.com/

Should meat be taken off the menu? An IQ2 debate.

A passionate debate about the ethics of eating flesh.

FOR the proposition is philosopher and vegetarian Peter Singer. He’s also the man credited with starting the animal rights movement. He has a lot of vocal supporters in the hall!

The hecklers reserve their ire for Adrian Richardson, head chef at La Luna restaurant in Melbourne who declares he loves meat and will eat anything with a pulse!

The two other members of Singer’s team are Philip Wollen, former vice president of Citibank and founder of the Kindness Trust and Veronica Ridge, Life and Style editor from The Age.

Wollen is highly emotional in his argument, declaring that we murder animals at our peril and ...’ If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we wouldn’t be having this debate tonight”.

On Adrian Richardson’s team is Fiona Chambers, an organic farmer from Daylesford who farms organic pigs. Her argument is that animals are a vital link in global ecology and that breeding rare animals for consumption is a way of preventing them from becoming extinct. Animal scientist Bruce McGregor is the third member of their team.

In every IQ2 debate the audience are polled before and after. Pre debate, those FOR the proposition registered 65%. Pre debate, AGAINST registered 22.5%. Post debate, FOR the proposition – 71.6%. Post debate, AGAINST 19.5%

It was a resounding win FOR the proposition that Animals Should Be Off the Menu
